Journey back to Pula’s past

Fort Muzil and military bunkers
Nowadays, the Adriatic Sea is a beautiful tourist destination, but for centuries it was a great battlefield between the countries that share it. The Austro-Hungarian Empire had a considerable navy with its main base being Pula, a real fortified city, with an extensive network of forts, artillery batteries and other coastal defences. One of those 26 fortresses is The Maria Luisa Fortress or simply, Fort Musil, located in the southwest of the Musil (also called Muzil, Mužilj or Mussil) Peninsula. Its construction began in 1852 and was completed in 1914, coinciding with the start of the First World War. In 1909, four coastal batteries (bunkers) were built on the shore near the fort. During our guided kayak tour we get to see these now abandoned army bunkers carved into the cliffs, standing tall above the clear waters of the Adriatic.
