Things to do in Istria – Drunken Railway

On the foothills of the Učka mountain, overlooking the region called Ćepić field, one lonely, abandoned railway from Lupoglav to Štalije had nothing else to do but to get “drunk” so it would get some attention. Now, partially thanks to social media, it’s lonely no more, getting more and more visitors each year.
Istria is Croatian region mostly visited for its sun and sea. Along the coastline you may find rich offer for various sea adventures, however if you’d like to experience something different, there are charming and pictoresque locations worth visiting. So, if you are looking for a relaxed, easy, short and fun countryside adventure suited for the whole family, paired with magnificent views, this very well hidden and almost forgotten railway – Drunken Railway (cro: Pijana pruga) is the place for that. The last train drove on these rails in 2009. So, since then, the rail has overgrown with bushes, grass and covered in heavy rust but at the same time it became a beautiful hidden gem with historical significance.
The backstory of the Drunken Railway
This railway got its funny name because its twisted and winding path looks like the result of a fun night out. The real story is just as interesting. After World War 2, in 1948 came the order from the government in Belgrade that a railroad is to be built from Lupoglav to Štalije in order for the coal to be transported more efficiently from the Raša coal mine. Designed to travel through hills and valleys while avoiding villages and obstacles, it has many sharp curves and tight turns. In its prime, these tracks played a crucial role in moving goods, helping to facilitate industrialisation and improve the economy. Today, while trains no longer thunder down these tracks, walking along them will offer a connection to its spirited past to every visitor.
How to get there?
The “drunken” section of this 52-kilometer-railroad is located just north of the village of Kožljak, Istria. After passing the village, drive slowly on the narrow road because it’s quite easy to miss the sharp right uphill turn (which is also not well marked) to Zagrad and the church of St. Cross, where you can park the car and start your journey.
The shortest path to the Drunken Railway is from Zagrad, from there you’ll have about 20-30 minutes of walking, depending on how many photos you take along the way and how much you admire the view. In case you prefer a longer hiking route you can park in other places, for example next to the chapel of St. Juraj in Kožljak.
